Indian comedy and comedians are going through a rough patch. There
isn't a single comedy show on air that is enjoying good ratings. Krushna
Abhishek and Sudesh Lahiri's The Drama Company vanished without a
whimper, Entertainment Ki Raat hardly showed any promise. Very few
people know a show called Comedy High School hosted by Ram Kapoor
existed.
There's hardly any buzz around the return of Comedy Circus and the legendary Archana Puran Singh, despite big names of television like Tejaswi Prakash, Anita Hassanandani and others associated with the show.
Comedy
reality shows at one point of time enjoyed a lot of viewership with
shows like The Kapil Sharma Show and Comedy Nights Bachao ruling the
hearts of millions. But things are not the same anymore. The failure of
Family Time With Kapil Sharma, the comeback show of comedy king Kapil,
shows that something is really wrong with Indian comedy.
Sunil Grover aka Dr. Mashoor Gulati made a comeback on TV with Dus Ka Dum. But that hardly got fans excited. While the character was extremely popular when it was part of The Kapil Sharma Show, outside the show, it failed to create magic.
Sunil was last seen as Professor LBW in Jio Dhan Dhana Dhan, but sadly the character looked lackluster.
Which
proves that somewhere down the line it's not just the comedian that
makes a show popular, the creative and writing team has a large role to
play in the success of the show. All the comedy shows that have failed
recently had very bad writing, people would agree.
For instance, Sunil Grover on Dus Ka Dum did not look in his form. He handed over a fake cockroach to Neha Kakar saying--Cockroach mar gaya, Tiger Zinda Hai. Did he expect us to laugh at his lame joke? In The Kapil Sharma Show, the way he serenaded Aishwarya Rai became the talk of the town, but when he did the same with Neha on Dus Ka Dum, it looked shady.
Indian comedy show makers will have to work really hard if they want to pull the crowds again. It is not so easy to make people laugh afterall.
